Chat 1 recap

without comments

  1. Unless I hear before Tuesday of next week that there are conflicts, we will plan on holding our next chats on
    • Friday, 7/20, 9-11 a.m.
    • Friday, 8/3, 9-11 a.m.
  2. I will look for your expectations essays in your course folders after 5 today. I will try to respond to them before the end of the day on Monday. I will include my comments in the document, so you will not receive a notification from me that I have read them.
  3. Your first log is due on Monday. For this submission, include all of your work up to this point (if you need to modify the form to accommodate your work, that is fine). Hereafter, simply copy and paste the form for each remaining week.

If you have any questions for me, I’m generally pretty quick about responding to emails or tweets. Otherwise, I will talk to you all again on the 20th.

Tasks to complete during the first week of class

without comments

The following is a list of tasks and assignments that are due during the first week of the term. Update 7/5/12: Before our first group chat at 9 a.m. on Friday, July 6, you must

  • respond to my request from Doodle.com (it will go to your MIX email account) to set a time for our first hangout,
  • create a Google+ account so you can participate in hangouts;
  • if necessary, install the Google Voice and Video plugin in your browser;
  • add jmj5805 [at] gmail [dot] com to your Google+ circles; and
  • thoroughly read all the material on the this course website, paying particular attention to the course description and policies and schedule. Be prepared during our first hangout to ask any questions about this material.

With the exception of the weekly internship log (see below) all of the remaining tasks must be completed before 5 p.m. on Friday, July 6.

  • Register for an account on this site so you post to the course blog. Expect a short lag between when you register and when I give you access to edit the site.
  • Create a Twitter account that contains your real name somewhere in the username or profile and
    • make it public,
    • post a message containing the course hashtag #ENGL491a, and
    • follow myself and all other members of the course.
    • You will then regularly monitor the messages using the course hashtag and
    • use the course hashtag to communicate with myself and your classmates (as appropriate).
  • Create a Google Docs account and
    • create a collection (GDocs calls folders “collections”; don’t be surprised or confused if I frequently refer to these collections as “folders”) for your 491a course work,
    • title the collection using the format “ENGL491a-Su12-[Lastname]” (for example, a student named Zaphod Beeblebrox would have a folder titled “ENGL491a-Su12-Beeblebrox”), and
    • share that collection (not any individual documents but the entire collection) with jmj5805 [at] gmail [dot] com. I will refer to this collection as your “course folder.” You will submit most of your work by adding it to this folder.
  • Download the Weekly Internship Log from the forms page and then upload it to your course folder.
    • Each week you will copy and paste the log table and fill it out. By the end of the semester, the document should contain a complete week-by-week account of your internship activities. If you have already begun or completed your internship, we will discuss how you handle logging your hours during the first hangout.
    • The first such log, covering the week of July 2-8, is due before 9 a.m., Monday, July 9.
    • Subsequent logs will be due by 9 a.m. on Monday of each week for the remainder of the semester.
  • Upload your Expectations Essay to your GDocs folder.
  • Fill out and have your internship supervisor sign your Internship Agreement form. This form with signatures should be submitted to me either in hard copy or electronically by 5 p.m. on Friday, July 6. You should save either a hard copy or digital copy (containing the signatures) of this form for your own records.
