Christina, I also struggle with this. As an undergraduate, I was able to form clearly-defined goals for myself for <i>some</i> of my courses. When I took a class in a new subject area, my goals were pretty broad. For an art history course, for example, I just wanted to learn a little bit about art history. That was all. I'm sure many of our students feel the same way. They come to ENGL 101 thinking, "I'm here to learn English." Or, more likely,"I just need to pass this class."
