The strange part about this is that it is one of the few classroom projects left in the world of education that the group must still meet together at one location and one time to do filming. All other types of projects, an individual can work on pretty much at their own convenience and location. Does this mean one of the more modern of medias have fallen behind in the times of innovation and web 2.0 tools? I would say, “yes.” This will probably be the last time I will choose to do a group video project. the are so many more open and convenient medias to use than video unless i’m producing and filming solo. It is such a hassle to meet people in recent times. Even interviews are more often done via e-mail or messaging of some form. People don’t even need to be in the same room to collaborate. Video has become more and more accessible to people and it is more and more abundant with sites like Youtube. But (and this is a large one) how many of the videos on Youtube are made by more than one person? Not too many. Sure, many of the popular ones are team produced, but that is only a small percentage of the video on that site. I really begin to question how long video will last as a “modern” media if it does not innovate soon

Usefulness of Prezi http://courses.johnmjones.org/multimedia/2012/04/usefulness-of-prezi/ http://courses.johnmjones.org/multimedia/2012/04/usefulness-of-prezi/#comments Mon, 16 Apr 2012 03:17:36 +0000 aan http://courses.johnmjones.org/multimedia/?p=2427 Continue reading ]]> When reflecting back on this course, one of the most exciting things that I learned and can be useful for me in the future is Prezi. I remember students using this in other classes and I was skeptical at first because it seemed extremely complicated. Even when our group put together our Prezi, it was a difficult task at first to figure out how to add text or manipulate a graph.  After editing our project several times, using it became easier and easier. Now, it comes naturally and seems strange that I used to think it was so complicated.

Prezi is almost like giving a poster presentation along with a power point presentation. It allows a person to take a single word and make it move. In class, we talked about how text moves. Several examples were given were the author made the text move like the object they were talking about. One story was about an elevator and the author positioned the words to move up and down like an elevator. Prezi allows the author to make the words move and come to life. For example, in our project we talked about how the color scheme can be loud in certain social media websites. We took the word “loud” and made it bigger and gave it a bold color and zoomed in quickly in and out to portray the meaning of the word.

Another great thing about Prezi is that an individual can work on different elements of a project and then link it all together. This is an amazing feature because when a person initially starts a project, his or her ideas can be scattered and is probably still in the brainstorming stage. Prezi allows the person to put down all their random thoughts and then link ideas together, which will then help, create the main thesis.

Growing up I had to do several poster projects, and if I messed up or envisioned an idea, I could not really just play around with ideas without starting over. In Prezi, I can change the color scheme, play with different fonts, link parts together and then unlink them if it did not worked. It is a great tool when presenting to an audience because it keeps their attention and it enriches your presentation and allows the audience to come to a clear understanding of the topic than say a regular poster board.

A Change in Heart http://courses.johnmjones.org/multimedia/2012/04/a-change-in-heart/ http://courses.johnmjones.org/multimedia/2012/04/a-change-in-heart/#comments Mon, 16 Apr 2012 02:10:29 +0000 Kelsey http://courses.johnmjones.org/multimedia/?p=2416 Continue reading ]]> Throughout the semester in our class we have been discussing the positive and negative effects of social media. In the blogs and discussions in class I have been partial to the positive aspects. Whether it was discussing the utility of twitter, the changing features of books/textbooks, the choices we have, copyright laws, or discussing the philosophical ‘Library of Babel,’ my mind shifted to the potential greatness of technology, the internet and social media. Being born into a culture where many of us have unlimited access to the internet allows most of our generation to digest ideas, opinions and beliefs that our parents and grandparents could not find so easily. This is great for social change and it allows our generation to keep an open mind and form our own opinions. This has been an argument of mine for the whole semester and I believe it’s a valid one.

However, recent events has led me to see the great downfall of our generation: Slacktivism. If you were on the internet about a month ago you probably know about and saw the STOP KONY campaign video. Now there are many things wrong with this campaign and the top-down development, non-profit, Invisible Children. However, that is NOT what this blog post is about. You can read about why the campaign and non-profit is not worth supporting here, here or even here.

Within hours my Facebook and Twitter pages were overtaken with the video. The idea was simple, watch this video and stop Joseph Kony. But How is watching this video going to stop a notorious terrorist thousands of miles away? The narrator did tell the young people to video to contact their senator. But how many actually did? I don’t know the numbers and I can’t find any on how many kids actually wrote to their senators. But I would be willing to bet a lot that most of the kids who posted the campaign video did not write their senators. I know more than half of the people that came up on my Facebook and Twitter supporting this cause did not do anything else besides posting the video.

This is just the most recent and widespread example. (You can read about the different forms of slacktivism here.)  It seems to me that social media has created a problem of inactivity. This is where technology, the internet and social networking is a problem. We can find out multiple sides to an issue, read about the right way to go about social change and then we can post about it on our Facebook. But then what? For our generation, it stops there. What do we do next? Our generation needs to understand that social change can start behind the computer but we must get out behind our computers, get out there and create action.

Multimedia This Semester http://courses.johnmjones.org/multimedia/2012/04/multimedia-this-semester/ http://courses.johnmjones.org/multimedia/2012/04/multimedia-this-semester/#comments Sat, 14 Apr 2012 15:25:39 +0000 sdavis47 http://courses.johnmjones.org/multimedia/?p=2403 Continue reading ]]> I cant believe that the class is almost over! I learned a lot this semester and got to hear a lot of great insights from everyone this semester. I loved the fact that we got to communicate through twitter, because lets face it, sometimes over all the strong opinions in this class it sometimes was the only way to get heard. I love that I was among people that I could learn from, and for the first time (well second if you count Johnthan in my English class last semester) I feel as though I learned something from other students, and they were my intellectual equals. I think that is why I love English 300 level classes. It weeds out all the poor writers, and less creative thinkers and allows me to actually learn from other people besides the teacher. I would like to thank everyone for teaching me a little something this semester, and broadening my horizons just a little. Although I still may need more convincing about the whole video games as an art. I wish my teachers in middle and elementary school had the technology we have today in teaching. When I was at that age the only thing technical was overhead projecters, and now we have powerpoints and other tools to enhance learning (all of which you can observe in Liz and I’s wonderful multi-module project). I loved the debates we had in class over our readings because it was interesting. I loved that fact that they got heated because it made us think of more points to add to our argument. I cannot wait to see everyone’s final project because speaking from my point of view I did something that I had a passion for, and finally got to talk about sports. I cant wait to see what other people’s passions are!

Thanks again for a great semester! Maybe I will see you all in other English classes in the future!

Text With Pizzazz http://courses.johnmjones.org/multimedia/2012/03/text-with-pizzazz/ http://courses.johnmjones.org/multimedia/2012/03/text-with-pizzazz/#comments Mon, 19 Mar 2012 03:24:32 +0000 aan http://courses.johnmjones.org/multimedia/?p=2356 Continue reading ]]>         Anne Eisenberg discusses the benefits of having digitalized textbooks in “Making Science Leap From the Page.” However, these digitalized textbooks have “pizazz” because they are “replete with punchy, interactive electronic features” which means that they are completely different from digitalized text that is simply scanned (Eisenberg). This textbook that the author is describing sounds perfect. It allows students to read and truly comprehend the information by having check up quizzes in between. Additionally, there are audio, video clips, illustrations, which enrich a student’s reading.

As an English and Philosophy major, I am always bombarded with pages after pages of reading. I always prefer that I print my papers or have a textbook where I can highlight, underline, star terms, and draw little illustrations to the side. I also have this habit of constantly turning my pages to see how many pages I have left. At first, it was frustrating to read text online because I would have to take a separate piece of paper to take notes. Later, I realized that some of the digitalized text allowed me to annotate on the computer. I took Human Nutrition and Food over the summer and my textbook was online. The greatest benefit that I had was the fact that I could search the entire book for key terms. When studying for the exams, I did not have to re-read entire chapter because with the click of a button, the key term that I was looking for would be highlighted.

The article mentioned Eric Schulz who made an “interactive, digital version” of the Calculus book written by William Briggs (Eisenberg). This book included “650 interactive figures, including graphs of functions, derivatives, and integrals” (Eisenberg). This is a great tool in teaching as each student learns differently. As an R.A., I have to tutor residents. I find that some students can easily understand what I am discussing while others need me to draw diagrams and charts. Sometimes, I need to do a combination. I believe that teachers have to do the same thing when they are teaching. I find that the professors who had multiple ways of presenting information helped me to remember that information the best. If these textbooks that the author is presenting becomes more of a use in schools, it would do the same thing as if a teacher used multiple ways to teach. This is a lot better than just pdf files that are simply scanned in without any interactive tools.

Selling A Book By Its Cover http://courses.johnmjones.org/multimedia/2012/03/selling-a-book-by-its-cover/ http://courses.johnmjones.org/multimedia/2012/03/selling-a-book-by-its-cover/#comments Mon, 19 Mar 2012 03:02:13 +0000 Joe Rinaldi http://courses.johnmjones.org/multimedia/?p=2212 Continue reading ]]> This week’s readings presented an interesting fork in the road for the digitization of text. Audrey Watters’ article “Apple and the Digital Textbook Counter-Revolution” had me realize what was really going on. She believed that Apple could have made better decisions with their program iBooks. The software allows users to publish their own books and post them through Apple. The catch: Apple has exclusive rights of user’s books. This business decision really defined Apple as a money-first, people-second company.

So let’s keep in mind that Apple’s mentality is MOE (money over everything). Now one of the biggest things Apple is known for is their sleek and simple design. Therefore the king of book covers is moving to the front shelf of the store. Anne Eisenberg discusses design techniques in her “Making Science Leap From the Page” article. She talks about the evolution of textbooks and the incorporation of more videos, visuals, etc. In the article she states that these new digital books have “pizzazz.”

The fork in the road is split in two: design and substance. The battle, which is common decision, is looks vs. personality. Sure, you can sit there and with your sleek and sexy iPad, but can you hold a meaningful conversation with it? Can you learn something from it? When you want to take things seriously, is it there to help?

The answer seems simple. But it’s so easy to say, yet tough to do. Apple, I’m talking to you. If you’re going to dip into the educational system, you need to be serious. You need to swim to the top of your money pool and take a deep breath. You have to realize that we’re dealing with the future of education, not a new iPhone app.

Online Innovations http://courses.johnmjones.org/multimedia/2012/03/online-innovations/ http://courses.johnmjones.org/multimedia/2012/03/online-innovations/#comments Mon, 19 Mar 2012 02:52:21 +0000 jnentwic http://courses.johnmjones.org/multimedia/?p=2335 Continue reading ]]> The online textbook idea I think is a very interesting topic. College students now a days, have grown up in a very technological generation. Every year, there is a new and innovative piece of technology that becomes the newest trend to make our lives easier. I think that since this is the case, this whole online textbook creation doesn’t surprise me. Plain, old textbooks have become so routine that we need a change in the way we present and teach material. If we are able to create online textbooks, then I think we should. One feature of the online textbook mentioned in the Making Science Leap from the Page Article that I thought was interesting was, “The book offers many dynamic, interactive illustrations. As students learn about the genetic code, for example, they can match amino acids to corresponding sequences on the double helix to understand how an entire protein emerges from genetic sequences” (Eisenburg). This feature forces the student to become involved in the readings. To be honest, I know many college students who slack off when it comes to class readings. Especially in a biology class such as this one, where reading an assignment that is over fifty pages long becomes boring the first page in. Another college in Washington has been using the online book, “Calculus” written by William Briggs and Lyle Cochran. “Students can manipulate 650 interactive figures, including graphs of functions, derivatives, and integrals, as they learn the basics of calculus.” This gives the students the ability of attentiveness, and also the practice they need to get better in the class. Coming from a current college student, having online books would help make learning a whole lot less of a struggle and much more interesting. Further into the article, Anne Eisenburg talks about other ideas creators have for digital designs for learning. I think we create so many new digital innovations focusing on ways to make our lives easier, that the new digital creations involving learning in school has yet to take off. I am currently in school for secondary education, and I am really excited to see what technology has in store for its impact in the classrooms in the future.

The process certainly would not happen over night and in all honesty some schools may not even be apart of the ‘movement’.  In reality, what I’m hoping for may not even be all that realistic.  But some college classes are making a move in that direction.  This class for instance (ENGL 303) is all done digitally.  Even though I never got one, it was suggested that the students go out and buy a tablet because all of our work and assignments are seen and accomplished through our website and other things done digitally.  I can’t recall if we have handed in one piece of paper this semester.  Don’t be fooled though, we have accomplished a lot of work this semester.

Tablets are such a smarter way to approach school.  I have a bunch of space being taken up because all the books I need for school.  My backpack is heavy and becomes annoying to lug around.  My backpack isn’t nearly as bad as it was in high school though.  We had to have so many books that the back pack was literally at capacity.  Lugging around heavy loads on your back for hours a day can also be said to result in back injuries too.  I would really like to try to purchase a tablet and use it for as many classes as I can next semester without buying the expensive textbooks.  The good part about these online textbooks is that you have that text for even longer that just that semester, so buying that digital version may very well be worth it.  I think these iPads and others tablets are capable of a lot and can open a lot of doors.

The death of print textbooks http://courses.johnmjones.org/multimedia/2012/03/the-death-of-print-textbooks/ http://courses.johnmjones.org/multimedia/2012/03/the-death-of-print-textbooks/#comments Sun, 18 Mar 2012 23:58:41 +0000 sarawise http://courses.johnmjones.org/multimedia/?p=2293 Continue reading ]]> This semester, I made a life-changing purchase: I bought an iPad. *cue applause*

Thanks to that purchase, I was able to download nearly all of my textbooks in digital form, saving hundreds of dollars. Although there are some things that I do miss about print textbooks, the money factor wipes that away.

Nearly all of the textbooks that I was required to purchase for my classes were available online in PDF form either free of charge or for a low fee. Not only am I able to carry these books with me everywhere I go, but I can do so without the weight of five or so different printed books on my shoulder.

While I haven’t used any of Apple’s new textbooks, I do believe that a digital textbook would be more beneficial. Imagine a math textbook that could act as a teacher while we work on homework assignments, working out an example in an embedded video to help us solve that one hard problem that we just can’t seem to understand. This seems like a winning innovation that can’t really be argued. How could this be a bad thing?

Although textbook publishers might find it difficult to make the jump to digital, this jump is probably going to be required in coming years. If digital media has already begun to kill print industries such as magazines, bookstores, and newspapers, what makes textbook publishers believe that their print industry will be exempt?

It’s time that publishers let go and adjust to the digital media world that we are now living in. There’s just no fighting it – digital is king.
