Remix Ethics would be beneficial to the pubic sphere. I think the medical field would benefit the most from remix ethics, because there are so many things that have not been discovered. With the collaboration of doctors and scientists when doing research, a lot of things can be created. The expansion of cures and medicines would grow at a quick pace with remix ethics in play.

One affordance I think is big in video is how emotions are immediately communicated to the audience. When something is written out vs in video, it’s up to the reader to process the emotions of the story. Where as in video the tone and emotion of a video is shown immediately. Whether its through a person talking, a visual image, or music. Music also plays a big role this, the type of music playing in the background of a video, can almost explain what mood the person or thing is in a video. In actual text none of these things are available.

I used this video because it uses humor to retell the story. It also uses simple style elements by using still images and music to explain the story. I like how they used slang to explain the storry being that hamlet is a very propper an dwell written story.I think this would be a good way to explain my chapter out of “Blown To Bits”.

On Pages 213-214 of Rheingold’s “Net Smart”, it discusses the 7 types of people who will thrive in a networked environment. The ones on the list that I believe I relate to the most would be: Those who like technology and use it, and those who can function effectively in different contents and collapsed context.I can honestly say i’m usually up to date when it comes to technology and knowing how to use it. I’ve always been pretty good with computers and figuring things out on them. I can also say that i can function effectively in different in different context of the web. I am apart of multiple social media sites, and i usually keep up with all of them. Another example of that would be maybe Facebook. There are many pages on Facebook that you can join, or be apart of, and I think that is a good example of functioning effectively with multiple contents and context.

In chapter four of “Blown To Bits”, I read about the internet and how it has evolved so much over the last decade. The introduction paragraph told a story about a man from Russia who migrated to the United States and later lost contact with the only family he had left. He told stories of his family to his grandchild, and she later went on to find them for her grandfather. The granddaughter was able to reach out by simply Google searching the family members name, and after 70 years they were reunited. This goes to show how powerful the internet actually is. You can find out anything in just a click of a button. I do wonder what the world would be like if technology was not as advanced as it is now. How would we access all of the information we do now, would people use libraries as much as they use to. It would be interesting to see how things would be with out all these things we have access to today.

    Blown to bits Ch. 3

The article I chose is “What you see is not what the computer knows” This talked about all that can be done with a computer that you actually don’t know about. According to the text the United States army wrote a report that information that only they could know about. They redacted the report so that these top secret things were edited out before it went public. “An Italian blogger, who scrutinized the U.S. recovered the redacted text and posted it on his website”. The moral of this story is that the computer can do way more then you think it can. Things that you think are deleted aren’t and if needed to anybody can pull up anything on an computer.

    The genre is Sneaker community

The purpose of these sites is to inform people about upcoming release dates on popular brand name shoes such as , Jordans, Nike, and Adidas.

    http://solecollector.com/
    http://sneakernews.com/release-dates/

Color- The background of each of the websites is white. Each site uses colored text to contrast the white background. Each site primarily uses white black and red text.

Use of images- Each site features large images of shoes that will be released. The images are always larger than the text. Brand logos appear frequently on each site. The most used logo is the Jordan logo.

Navigation- Each site utilizes navigational tabs located at the top of the website. Common tabs are release dates, featured brands, and contact information.

Use of animation- Each of these sites feature animation and video on their home screen. Videos include advertisements for different brand name shoes.

Categorization- Each site has shoes categorized by brand and release date.

This genre uses these conventions to meet the needs of the intended audience. The sites are geared towards young people who would like to be able to navigate quickly and easily.

I believe the digital media copyright issues are way less complex than they were when this chapter was written. According to chapter 6 in “Blown to Bits” in 2005 The (RIAA) filed lawsuits to over 26,000 people for illegally downloading copyrighted music. In present day downloading copyrighted music is a very common thing, there are now even apps that allow you to download music that have yet to be released in stores , iTunes etc. There is no actual consequence for downloading copyrighted music anymore, where as before there were lawsuits being thrown left and right. Its not always fair to the artists who actually work to make this music, because they don’t receive all that was really earned from their music because of the way online downloading works. Yes they get paid for all of the albums sold, and singles bought, but what about all of the other millions of songs that are downloaded to peoples computers? There is absolutely nothing they can do about it, but hope people do the right thing.

In applying Rheingold’s techniques to this chapter I would first research his sources and company to make sure the information is valid and it’s a credible source. I trust and enjoyed his techniques and style of writing for various reasons. For starters his style of writing is very relatable, he includes numerous examples and real life experiences about his topics. For example on page 78 Rheingold tells a story of how his daughter was using invalid websites to search things. He explained to her how everything on the internet isn’t as it seems. He found a website on Martin Luther King Jr., and later realized this site was created by a group of white supremacist. The examples he presents make topics easy to read and understand. The author also mentions plenty of sources in his book, just so his audience something to check. That alone makes me comfortable as a reader, to know that the information I am being fed is valid. As far as my experience and engagement with books, I am sure that this is a well written book, there are plenty of things I have read that has had me all over the place. This text was straightforward easy to understand and credible which makes this a well written book in my eyes.

    Erhyer,

I totally agree with you. Although people may look at remix ethics as taking other peoples idea, if you look at the bigger picture you can see that with a collaborative effort many things can be created and ideas can be shared. I think that remix ethics is ultimately a great idea.

    Tarin,

Its funny that you say that you are a private person online. I happen to be the exact opposite when it comes to the internet and social media. With sites such as Instagram, Facebook, and Twiitter I’ve never really been private/. The ironic thing about that is that i’m more so a private person. I would prefer to have all of my accounts private, but because I am an athlete I cant really do so. That definitely has its pros and cons.

    Mike,

Technology especially in your job field is very important. Like you said you use it to find people when doing investigations and finding witnesses. I bet It would make your job a million times harder then it is now if you didn’t have access to all of the tools and technology that is available now.

    Tarin,

This is actually a very interesting topic and it makes me wonder how things actually were on that day. With so much going on how was it possible to communicate through all of the chaos. This also reminded me of a episode on a series I used to watch called Revenge. There was an episode that somewhat emulated the accident that happened on 9/11. There was a bombing in a building in the middle of NYC and all cell towers, computers, and forms of communications were knocked out. This made me wonder if there was a situation like that when the actual explosion happened in 2001, being that the technology wasn’t as up to date as it is now.

    Chasity,

I totally agree, file sharing does have its pros and cons. I never really thought about it in that way, by people downloading the copyrighted products it does put them on a map and give them extra exposure regardless if the music is purchased or not. Although the artist are losing money they probably aren’t missing out on too much being that they are already making an abundance of money.

    Tiffany,

I agree with you about Rheingold’s “triangulation” technique That could be very useful in a lot of things, That is a great way to find credible sources. Also knowing thathis book was publishes through MIT press which is a well known company which also makes it to believe tat Rheingold’s text was trustworthy.
