One affordance of video is navigation. The computer affords clicking on the mouse, selection buttons, arrows, etc to move from screen to screen and site to site.

The idea of remix ethics focuses on collaboration and expanding on existing ideas and discoveries. This is most evident in science today. Each day we take an older concept and make it new. Cancer study is a great example…. No one piece of research or discovery can be called unique since it started with a key concept from another.
Our society puts great emphasis on originality and receiving credit where credit is due. Remix ethics allows for sharing of thoughts and making them better. It’s not about taking one’s idea and calling it your own.

This video provides information on how Tsunamis are formed, but in an easy to understand and illustrated method. Although this video is geared toward a younger audience, it provide an explanation that adults can appreciate it too.

“Those who like technology and use it enthusiastically and nimbly”. This description of networking individuals rings true in my circumstance. Often during any free time I can be found checking email, Facebook, Pinterest, shopping online, etc. I thrive on being connected at all times, and being able to utilize the internet for any need.

Rheingold also points out that “those with bigger and more diverse networks” would emerge. Today employment applications are online as well as job postings. People network with others through sites like Linkedin. Social media helps individuals locate long lost friends and family from many years past and reconnect. This turn to technology has effected the entire population and those without a computer or smartphone are left out.

I, too, was shocked that an entire country would censor information available. It would make sense to me offer some form of censorship, but I feel it may be the responsibility of the parent, company, or school system to censor sites and internet searches- not a country.

Rheingold shared some very important insights in Chapter 4 of Net Smart. One of the most important concepts he shared were the collective intelligence tips. He narrowed these tips to simply 4 items, which seem like they would be second nature of humanity, but are often elusive.
    1. Encourage casual conversation.
    2. Diversify your group.
    3. Practice collaborating.
    4. Make it easy to contribute.
These should be the mantra for any group of people bound together for any reason- project, study, school assignment, etc. Although I do find Rheingold sometimes rambling, here he makes great points of how to work together with anyone and its important life lesson.

In Chapter 4 of W/D we learn about copyright and citing sources. It was interesting to find out about the different types of copyrights or licenses available to authors. This is great news since contacting an author and obtaining permission might not be a viable solution.
There are also some internal checks you can perform as to the legitimacy of using any source. I did not realize there were those specific guidelines around using work for a multimodal project or anything else. Citations have always been discussed when using any non-original work within your own, but the explanations of permissions and licensure were never fully explained before.
Is this information that should be taught when citing sources as well? Or does this not matter, since work is normally for educational purposes and only shared within a small group?

Copyright laws have definitely become more complex since the text was written. There are so many new ways that technology has advanced, and users who specialize in finding ways to share technology without abiding by the copyright laws.
Torrent is a site that will allow movie and music downloads for free, meaning that celebrities and movie makers lose money with every download. These sites do lack in one area- security. Because sites like this are made by “hackers’, there are often serious security issues and your computer could be harmed.
Another area of concern for copyright laws are the “bootleggers” who sneak into a movie theater and record the movie. This may seem like an outdated technique, but it is still prevalent in this day and age. There is a man who goes by the local car dealerships in my area and offers new movies on DVD, even though they have not been released to the public.
The question arises….how do we protect the copyright and ensure that artists are protected? This would entail the consumer not buying restricted copies of movies or informing the authorities of illegal activities.

I agree with you, especially as far as science goes. It is imperative that we build upon what others have done or taught us in the past, but take it once step further. After all, isn’t everything based upon the basic principles taught about the original scientists?

    Tiffany,

You make great points concerning youth and the use of technology. Not only is this causing them to miss out on valuable experiences. Children also need to understand the consequences of using social media incorrectly. I have seen some students and teachers post pictures on Facebook asking them to be shared and passed on. This lesson is important so that everyone understands just how fast something can be shared online, and also that once something is placed online, it will never disappear.

    Shay,
One of the great points you make is about medical information found online. This can be of great help, but more so has the possibility of self-diagnosis. Sites such as Wed-MD offer many different options for determining an illness, but a big problem is that many illnesses often present with the same symptoms.

    Tiffany,
I agree that the business plan for Jamberry seems to follow a different path than other home-based businesses. It is very refreshing to see a company realize that adults today live very busy lives and often do not have time or convenience of hosting a party where friends would feel obligated to purchase.
Using mass media is definitely essential in this day and age. I, myself, have found that I am shopping for antiques on line now through Facebook. There are also classified listings for those selling misc household items, and seems more secure than Craigslist.

I agree that the only way that copyright infringement will stop is for the consumer to take action. While it may appear that downloading a movie or song for free is no big deal, there are many people who depend on the sale of such media. This does not only effect the celebrities involved, but production, studio, and the distributor.

    Mike,

I agree that the techniques mentioned in this chapter would require and exorbitant amount of time. I believe there are more efficient methods of researching validity, as in the option you mentioned of reviewing numerous sites and matching information.
