“Remix ethics” would be good for the public sphere. Everything has always started from one thing. TV shows, books, music, etc. I mean even the whole incident with Pharrell Williams and Robin Thicke and a blurry copyright law. The jury awarded about $7.3 million to Marvin Gaye’s family. With having this idea of a remix ethic, it will help when it comes to something like this. There has been millions, billions of songs out there, just like books, but not everything we come up with is original. It always comes from somewhere. We can be inspired though from this and need to take this to get something new and maybe, better. There could be a new redefining out there.

One affordance in the video would be aural mode. This happens with music, sound effects, ambient noise/sounds, and even, silence. Some things can be seen in a different way and take a different approach with feelings, responses, and needed action. So in a video you will have more creepy music in the background to scare someone compared to say, Casablanca, you will have more classical, piano music.

Elders React to Challenges! (Cinnamon, Salt & Ice, & Milk Chug)

I chose a video about the elderly being introduced to what the younger generation does when it comes to Cinnamon, Salt & Ice, & Milk Chug. I feel like I am some of these elderly people because these type of challenges disgust me. Even one guy said, “What does that do to your lungs?” when he watched the girls do the cinnamon challenge. It is very entertaining to wait all their different reactions as they go through the three. The older generation is not as tech savvy as the younger, so seeing what goes on in the world now, made their reactions even better. What the older generation did was much different than the younger. Also the fact that they picked the older generation to look at this than say, the younger generation, their responses are really different. I even looked at the Twerking one and a few others before I came down to this one. This video shows a lot of information of how things have changed throughout time.

Technology is an addiction and it was not until I went to England over the summer that I realized how much I could be missing out on life with my head in my phone or laptop. I see five-year-olds with phones. When I was five, I was outside playing when the weather was nice, or inside playing board games and/or reading. I actually have a no phone zone sometimes when it comes to people I am talking to, so I can really focus and understand what they are saying to me. When I do use the internet, I am one of “those who like technology and use it enthusiastically and nimbly”. If I can’t make it to the library, it is easier for me to research information about my book “Paul Revere and John Hancock,” however, if I get the opportunity, I will go to the library and get a physical book. I am more of the second part of that (enthusiastically and nimbly). Don’t get me wrong, I love technology, but if I could have a book, I would prefer a book. I tried to avoid the internet and only check Facebook and other social Medias once I wake up and once before I go to bed. I do not want the world to know everything I am do. After my England trip, I am realizing I am putting up more boundaries, so I also fall in the category of “those who learn how to manage their boundaries”.

The fact that an entire country would censor information availability is interesting. It should be the parents or a company that might censor a website, but not a country. I feel like with this, people might try to find a way around it just to see why a certain site would be censored. With the lack of information, it seems that people will not be able to see what is going on. Because of this China can only relate to the things that China wants them to and not be open-minded. The one good thing about censorship however is when it comes to search engines like Google. “Among the items and services for which Google will not accept advertisements are fake designer goods, child pornography, term paper writing services, illegal drugs and some legal herbal substances, etc.” (145). Search engines are allowed to control what products should be seen, however, back to China, I do not feel like a country should be able to do that. There is even a Google China out there. Since it is the China version, it might not even work as much and since they censor more it seems, there are not as many web pages that would come up. Search engines do come in handy. In chapter 4, right in the beginning, they mention about a family that was able to find their family after seventy years in Florida. Because of the search engine this happened. “The digital explosion has produced vase quantities of informative date, the Internet has scattered that data across the globe, and the World Wide Web has put it within reach of millions of ordinary people” (109-110). You need to know where something is though and through 7 different steps, a query, or queries are form in the end. There will be challenges, but the search engine should be able to get the results.

In chapter 3 of NET Smart, it focuses on Participation Power. With the world being a digitally network place, participating can become real power and it’s the kind of power that is worth sharing. During this participation, there is a toolbox of skills. “Persuasion, curation, discussion, and self presentation foremost among them, and spans a range of involvement, from tagging a photo or bookmarking a site to editing a Wikipedia page or publishing a blog” (Rheingold, 114). Using these skills and the knowledge of the participation can help when it comes to landing the job you have always wanted or even just organize something. In this time, everyone is re-creating new “wrinkle” and realizing they cannot be blocked from the future. Stanford professor, Fred Turner, stated that, “I believe we’ll all be better off when more people learn to be good network entrepreneurs; you can’t succeed at network entrepreneurship unless you consistently enrich your network” (Rheingold, 119-121). With doing this, we are all investigating and arguing on what we read and see, even hear every day.

    University Official Websites

    Websites:
    West Virginia University (WVU) http://www.wvu.edu/
    Virginia Tech (VT) http://www.vt.edu/
    University of Connecticut (UCONN) http://uconn.edu/
    University of Massachusetts (UMASS) http://www.umass.edu/

Site Purpose: The texts’ purposes in the sites are to provide insight on the different universities people can attend in the future, or ones they are at now.

Background: The sites have a solid background and are their school colors. WVU has blue, gold and white; VT has red, orange, and white; UCONN has blue and white; and UMASS has mainly white with some red. Each has a slideshow or picture of some sort below the navigation bar.

Navigation: Horizontal navigation bars can be found across the four websites with links of different sub-pages a person can look into. Scrolling down to the bottom, you can find more links to different pages, but the main links are up top where people will see them right away.

Use of Words: The titles are simple and right to the point. Some seem eye catching. Article links provide a good insight on what it will be about, so you know what to expect as well.

Author: The author of each website is someone through the school who takes information of things going on and just general information of the school and puts it on the website. They are people who know the school well enough to know what is important to place on the first page.

Use of Images: The use of images are correlated with the schools and information given. This could be from the WVU Therapy Dogs, to WVU occupational therapy student being one of America’s up-and-coming Ironman triathletes. The images are big and show what the school is about.

The sites’ audiences are people who are interested in college, or in college and want to know what is new. The sites are helpful for people who might just need to know about event, but can range to Admission and Aid. All four websites have a general purpose as they tend to have the same structure and outline.

The digit media is more complex when it comes to copyright issues, especially since this chapter was written. Since 2003 there have been more than 26,000 lawsuits against individuals for illegal downloading. That is a lot in over ten years, but now it is even easier to download anything. You see friends doing it and you think it’s cool, so then you start downloading, then your friends know and it just passes down. Peer pressure can be involved because if one person does it, you might do it too. Sharing information goes far with how fast technology has been going. Nothing is safe anymore or secure.

Tanya Anderson run in with the RIAA had begun nine months previously with a demand letter from a Los Angeles law firm. The letter stated that a number of record companies had “sued her for copyright infringement and that she could settle for $4,000-5,000 or face the consequences” (Ch 6, 195). With something like this, it seems like a scam and protested that she had never downloaded any music.

This book was written in 2008, a lot of media things were still approaching. People could probably get away with saying they did not download things, compared to today, majority of the people probably do just download things illegally. I think because so many people do it now. People are more aware of the copyrighting because it is more popular and out there. The government will keep having to change policies because of new technology and how there are more hackers. With more advance things, it gets more complex to how to go about everything in the digit media world. We will never know what the limits are when it comes to the digit world since people can share almost everything now.

I trust this book because of how it is presented and it being from a publishing company. This is a book I would pick up on the shelf if I was walking by. Rheingold is giving opinions and examples to how achieve online. He seems to know what he is doing and he is also proving that by having the sources. Having sources is a key to any book like this, or history book. You need to back up your information to draw an audience in to believe them. In just 32 pages, he has 117 footnotes. For just the 32 pages, that seems like a lot, compared to other books I have looked into. This is showing that it is a trustworthy book because he is backing up his information. When I received this book in the mail, I could not get over how shiny the cover looked and neat as well. The colors work and there was not much on the cover which made it not overwhelming.

This book is for a class, so looking at it, I need to look at it in more of an academic standpoint then just for a fun read. It is going to well written and straight to the point. I am hoping though that it is clear and someone like me, with a learning disability, can learn from it with not asking too many questions. I need a reliable book and website. When it comes to my three capstone classes and I need to do research, I will not be on Wikipedia. I will be using .gov or .edu because those might not be 100% accurate, but they will be more accurate because they come from a government or educational place. When I am looking for a new publishing company when it comes to book 2, I will be looking for well known places and see what they have to offer on their websites because we know more of them then smaller businesses.

It can be positively influential to the public sphere, yes. I mentioned in my post about music with Thicke and Pharrell. Everything comes from the starting point. I think it would be best to access relevant work by others because it will help you gain something out of it as expanding on it, or thinking of something new. The old can help the new become better.

I feel like technology is an addiction and with having younger generations only want to text now is an issue because there is a lack of communication verbally and face to face. When I go to events, I normally do not post anything online because I don’t want people to know where I am all the time. Also, when I go to events, I feel like it is best to put your phone away and pay attention to the event and the people you are with. I always find it a distraction when I am with someone, trying to hang out with them and all they are doing is on their phones. With this, I do not even know if they are really paying attention and feel they are missing out on things with the people close to them.

I stated that I too also believed to fit in the category, “those who like technology and use it enthusiastically and nimbly.” I am always on the computer when I can be to look up things. If I hear something on the news, I’ll go on the laptop to find out more about what could be going on. I tend to be one of the quickest as well like you had stated. Sometimes I even know what they are already talking about that I won’t have to look it up for them to know. We do however need to undersand the boundaries and learn how to manage our time on the laptop. There is research out there that staring at a screen (laptop, tablet, phone) majoirty of the day can strain your eyes and not blink as much. Yet, having this technology helps sprend more of a diverse social group or groups around.

Collaboration and cooperation are very important when it comes to the online world and communicating. Those are the first two C’s. The next one is collective intelligence. Wanting to become a fact checker, I and others are always searching for general information and though like others said with the example of Wikipedia, people can change it, but you will be able to tell if they do. I say this because you can go on a .edu or .gov website based on the same thing and see the inaccuracy. I do use Wikipedia sometimes. It just depends on the situation, however, I do not just use Wikipedia just because the fact checking can be changed. There needs to be more than one way to communicate with others which is why search engines were designed.

I do not fully think our information is safe which is why I never use cloud technology. Something about it just makes it iffy in my mind, personally. I mean like you said, it works most of the times, but there is still that smaller percentage out there that make hackers able to receive information. You make a good point with the celebrity phone hack scandal and right about medical records are kept via internet servers. My family just got a letter in the mail from BlueCross BlueShield to be aware of the hacks that have been happening through their company and to keep an eye out with our bank accounts and everything. I never really realized until now, how much is kept via internet because it is scary and frightening. We rely on something that makes our lives easier not to realize that it is not all safe. We need to try future hacks from happening because it seems to be getting worse. I do not know how it should be done, but I believe the government should be looking into it more.

I believe that they can do something about it. We have to assume people will do the right thing, but at the same time, there are things people can do. It might be harder now since more people do download say, music. You ask the question, “What about all the other millions of songs that are downloaded to peoples computers?” There might be a few people out there that don’t want to waste the money to buying the music, so they find an easy way out that can get them in trouble. Also, like another person has said, they could already think an artist is rich enough. This doesn’t have to apply just to music, but maybe even a book someone was able to find or a movie. People are growing more aware of the copy right issues due to the access of growing technology. The government has a new challenge they need to deal with. Copy right is a hard issue that we have to figure out especially today compared to that of fifty years ago. It is hard to try to protect everything because there will still be that one loop hole out there that someone can bypass.

I do not find it too naive that you think that about the book. I always found that the books should be credible because we are pursuing a career and should know what is right and not read something that might be wrong. Sometimes you can’t trust a professor though, but I would say about 95% of the time you can. I just say this because I had a professor where the book did not turn out as well as it should be. I probably also figure I knew it was not as accurate because I learned so much about the American Revolution already.
If a book is not clear or organized, then I always wonder off to do something else. Sometimes if the book and how it looks doesn’t appeal to me, it takes forever just for me to read a paragraph. You need to have a good flow in which you can read the whole thing with no problem and be willing to pick it up again.
