…was a land in which this thing called the Internet didn’t put everything in the world directly at our fingertips. Luckily for the generation which is now ruled by technology, we can communicate in a millisecond, research years of science with a few simple keystrokes, and do things such as homework assignments in a manner which allows them to be shared with a simple click of a built in (or wireless) mouse.
However, all of these things may soon come to an end if our government continues to work toward acts such as SOPA and PIPA, as well as the subsequent acts which are building from the failures that were those original documents. As brought out within the text of “Blown to Bits,” we have reached a time of true uncertainty when it comes to the censorship of Internet media in all its forms.
While it’s sad that something such as these acts can exist for as long as they did before our generation picks up on it (because, let’s face it, most college students would rather watch E! News than CNN!). The fact of the matter is that once our generation gets involved in things, we have the power to change them. Look at how quickly SOPA and PIPA died once the Multimedia Monsters caught on! Between the Internet blackouts and the massive reactions nationwide, they were quickly put to a stop.
This teaches us several things: When a bunch of college students get fired up, it’s hard to stop them. When a large group of US citizens is empowered with information (which was available to them long before they decided to look for it), they can make things happen with said information. Perhaps most importantly, the government is going to have to be a little more sneaky if they’re going to mess with our “Internets.”
