Lessig’s Remix (especially Chapter 1) had a great emphasis on copyright infringement as it was perceived by a famous composer by the name of John Phillip Sousa. He believed that society could be described as a R/W culture, where in content such as music could be duplicated in it its own way. Sousa also believed that society was slowly becoming a R/O culture, which means that people would become less interested in developing or producing. In today’s society I can see ways that this could be true. However, I also see his prediction falling short. People may have people over and play music from their ipod docking station instead of sitting around with a few instruments and playing for their guests, but the art is not completely lost. Many people play cover songs as a way to learn to play an instrument (“amateurism” as Sousa would say). Also, programs such as YouTube, which would be in danger of being shut down if recent Copyright bills were to be passed, harbor a platform for these amateurs to get feedback on their skills.
