Choose Wisely…

I was required to take numerous English classes throughout my high school and collegiate careers. It never failed that there was always one project where the teacher allowed us to pick whatever topic our hearts desired and write about it. This was the absolute hardest thing for me to do probably because I’m too indecisive and picky all at the same time, but nonetheless, it would take me days and days to pick a topic that I could stomach writing five to ten pages about. This is why the quote from Rushkoff’s Program or be Programmed really resonated with me. He says, “Still, there’s a value set attending all this choice, and the one choice we’re not getting to make is whether or not to deal with all this choice.” After I read this quote, it almost made me laugh out loud. Not that the quote itself was funny, but at my stupidity. I had spent multiple hours trying to make a decision about what I was going to write about when really I had no choice at all in the matter –the picking of the topic, yes, but the fact that I had to make a choice, no. It didn’t matter what topic I picked, I had to choose (I mean, unless I wanted to take a zero, but you get my point). We go our whole lives making choice after choice after choice and there will never come a time when we don’t have to make choices. No one can ever say that they aren’t going to make a choice, either between something, someone, or in general, because in saying that you’re not going to make a choice, you are in fact making the choice not to make a choice.
