iLove iTextBooks

After reading, Apple and the Digital Textbook Counter-Revolution by Audrey Watters I was surprised at the negative response in regards to iTextBooks. I have always been a huge supporter of any digital books because of how convenient and efficient they are. I own a Kindle and I love how much cheaper the books are on amazon.com. Not only is it price efficient but the things you are able to do with the books once you purchase them make it a lot easier to learn. For a literature class I was able to download poems, highlight, make comments beside the poem, which makes things so much easier to reference for me.

I know on iPads people have the ability to make note cards in class directly on their iPad which ultimately can turn into study notes when you have an exam. Not only is this more time efficient, but an easier way to copy notes in class. In the article Watters says, ”As I’ve written before a number of times, (college) students have been incredibly reluctant to adopt digital textbooks, in no small part because they don’t save them any money.” I find this extremely false because a lot of people that I know are always complaining that some company should introduce a device that provides digital books. We have entered a generation where technology and digital devices are easier to work with. There are more things to do on them and it truthfully is easier.

I do agree with Watters when she says that they are expensive and not everyone can afford them however textbook are not cheap either. I would rather purchase a digital device that can last me a long time, and over the course of my education download books I need for a much cheaper price. But I’m just an Apple junkie and love technology.. maybe I’m biased!

  1. I agree that e-textbooks have many benefits, however in the current situation they are just too expensive of a demand for all students to have them. What would be nice if Apple could implement in the future a program that gives schools a discount on e-readers or iPads if they buy them in bulk. So that when students arrive on their first day of High School they can all have the choice to purchase an e-reader for only 50$ instead of the usual 100$ or more. This would be a pretty steep demand on e-reader companies to cut their prices in half, but if they did it would be really great PR for the company and would probably create some life-long buyers. Then everyone could have the chance to learn on such an easy and successful device!
