Steve Johnson’s articles, ” How Twitter will change the way we live” was very similar to the perspective I had when Twitter first made its appearance in the world of social networking. Johnson says that his first impression of twitter was that it was inefficient and a waste of time. Due to the fact that a network limits users to 140 characters is pointless and not interesting in the least way. All of Johnson’s remarks about Twitter I find to be ironic because he is vocalizing what feelings I initially had and still have about twitter.
When I first heard about Twitter, a lot of people I talked to were skeptical about this form of social networking due to all it seemed like was another form of Facebook. I heard it was just like Facebook at first that was just “status” updates called “tweets”. Until enrolling in this class I did not have a Twitter and never planned to get one because even when Facebook first came out I was skeptical of that as well, but now have a Facebook. Maybe this semester will change my perspective on twitter and I will engage with it more like I do Facebook.
However, I found the #hackedu Twitter communication to be interesting. The fact that these people were Tweeting as apart of this convention or seminar on hacking education and strangers could follow and be interested the same as if they were also in the conference room with these people tweeting. I think this is a valid way for Twitter’s abilities to change the way we live. It will allow people to join into conversations and networks they are interested in without being there.
