Two Thumbs Up For Intertwinguiarity

In Morville’s text, “Ambient Findability” (https://ecampus.wvu.edu/webct/urw/tp0.lc5116001/cobaltMainFrame.dowebct) he talks about a term coined by Ted Nelson called Intertwingled. I found that Chapter 4 of this text was extremely interesting and I agreed with it means. Intertwingled is a term that combines the words, “intertwined” and “intermingled” that is used to describe information through a device that can be used in any situation.

A perfect example of what intertwingled means is shown through one of Morville’s comments in his text: “We experience Nelson’s intertwinguiarity every time we click a hypertext link. We move fluidly between different pages, documents, sites, authors, formats, and topics” (Morville, 64). This really caught my attention because if I interpreted intertwinguiarity correctly, this example makes a lot of sense. There are so many different things that can be accessed through one device. Not only do we access information, but also through the device we gain information in a more efficient way. We don’t need to search a thousand different things. Many of the things we are already accessing provide us with different outlets that work together and make thing a lot easier.

Morville talks about the progression of cell phones and how we are able to now access internet, email, calendars, stereos, cameras, TV, global news, and much more all in a single device (66). Through devices such as cell phones we are able to do so much more with them in any situation. We can read, write, buy, sell, talk, listen, work, play and much more. Technology and society has presented us with many different forms of technology that help us achieve more than we ever thought we could in the past. Morville mentions that because of devices such as our cell phones, we are able to become smarter or more informed individuals. We have constant access to news sources and are able to look up facts from anywhere and anytime we feel is most convenient/appropriate (67).

I enjoyed reading this part of Morville’s text because I completely agree with what he is saying and how he relates it to Nelson’s term, intertwingled. I love my cell phone and I can access almost anything that I need to access from it within minutes. It is extremely efficient and provides me with opportunities to increase my knowledge about situations. I though this particular part of Morville’s text what spot on.
